This section gets more rain, less snow at lower elevations, and has a different forest character — more Douglas fir, less ponderosa pine.

Central Sierra — the park country

Southern Sierra — the high country

South of the San Joaquin, the range narrows but gains elevation. This is where the 14ers live. Kings Canyon, Sequoia, the Golden Trout Wilderness, the John Muir Wilderness.

  • Highway 88 (Carson Pass) — 8,574 feet, usually closes November to May
  • Highway 50 (Echo Summit) — 7,382 feet, kept open more reliably
  • Highway 4 (Ebbetts Pass) — 8,730 feet, steep, narrow, seasonal
  • Highway 108 (Sonora Pass) — 9,624 feet, dramatic, definitely seasonal
  • Highway 120 (Tioga Pass) — 9,943 feet, the Yosemite high-country crossing, closes early and opens late
  • Highway 168 (Westguard Pass) — minor, seasonal, eastern access only
  • Highway 180 / 198 — these don't cross the crest; they dead-end in Kings Canyon and Sequoia respectively
  • Highway 178 (Walker Pass) — 5,250 feet, the only low-elevation crossing in the southern Sierra, open year-round

By trail

The Pacific Crest Trail runs the length of the range. The John Muir Trail covers the central/southern high country from Yosemite Valley to Mount Whitney — about 211 miles.

Hundreds of other trails access lakes, peaks, and passes. Most trailheads sit on the western slope. Eastern access exists but trailheads are fewer and often higher.
