How Many Volcanoes Are In El Salvador
El Salvador is smaller than Massachusetts. You could drive across the whole country in about three hours if traffic cooperates. But packed into those 21,000 square kilometers are more volcanoes per square mile than almost anywhere else on Earth.
The short answer: El Salvador has 23 volcanoes if you count every distinct volcanic edifice recognized by the country's geological service (SNET). Of those, six are considered historically active — meaning they've erupted in recorded history. Another handful show signs of unrest: fumaroles, seismic swarms, gas emissions. The rest are dormant or extinct, eroded into the kind of conical hills that define the Salvadoran skyline.
That number — 23 — comes with a footnote. Volcanologists argue about definitions. Some counts go as high as 30 if you include parasitic cones, lava domes, and collapse structures. So others stick to 20 "major" volcanoes. But 23 is the official figure you'll see in SNET publications and most academic literature. We'll stick with it.
What Makes El Salvador a Volcanic Hotspot
The country sits on the western edge of the Caribbean Plate, right where the Cocos Plate dives beneath it. Classic subduction zone. On top of that, the Cocos Plate melts as it sinks, magma rises, and you get a volcanic arc — the Central American Volcanic Arc — stretching from Guatemala down to Panama. El Salvador gets the densest stretch of it.
The arc runs east-west across the country, roughly parallel to the Pacific coast. In practice, most of the population lives in the shadow of these volcanoes. Still, san Salvador, the capital, sprawls at the base of the San Salvador Volcano (also called Quezaltepeque). Santa Ana, the second-largest city, sits near the country's highest peak. This isn't coincidence — volcanic soil grows coffee, and coffee built the economy.
The Big Six: Active Volcanoes You Should Know
Santa Ana (Ilamatepec)
Highest volcano in the country at 2,381 meters. Also the most famous. The last major eruption was 2005 — explosive, sent ash over nearby towns, killed two people from landslides triggered by heavy rain on fresh ash. It's monitored closely. Which means its summit crater holds a stunning turquoise-green lake that changes color with mineral content and light. Before that, 1904. Hiking to the crater rim is one of the country's signature day trips, but access closes when seismic activity spikes.
San Salvador (Quezaltepeque)
Looms over the capital. Consider this: the main crater (El Boquerón) is now a national park. Still, last erupted in 1917 — a flank eruption that opened a fissure on the north side, lava flows destroyed a coffee plantation, earthquakes leveled much of San Salvador. The modern city basically grew up its flanks. And on clear days you see the whole valley. You can walk the rim and look down 500 meters to the crater floor. The volcano also has a parasitic cone, El Picacho, which is the actual high point at 1,960 meters.
San Miguel (Chaparrastique)
Eastern sentinel. Because of that, symmetrical cone, classic stratovolcano shape. This leads to most frequent eruptor of the bunch — 26 recorded eruptions since 1570. Last significant activity: 2013-2014, ash columns, evacuations. 2022-2023 saw increased gas emissions and tremor. The city of San Miguel (population 300,000+) sits just 15 km away. This one keeps volcanologists awake at night.
Izalco
"El Faro del Pacífico" — the Lighthouse of the Pacific. Born in 1770, erupted almost continuously for 196 years, guiding ships at night. Stopped in 1966. Now a perfect black cone rising from older volcanic terrain, no vegetation on its upper slopes. Hiking it is brutal — loose volcanic sand, steep, no shade. But the view from the rim into the 250-meter-deep crater is unforgettable. It's inside Cerro Verde National Park, alongside Santa Ana and Cerro Verde itself.
Conchagua
Easternmost volcano, on the Gulf of Fonseca. Two peaks: Conchagua (1,243 m) and Cerro del Ocote (1,133 m). Less studied, less monitored. Think about it: fumaroles active on both peaks. In practice, last confirmed eruption: 1892 (questionable). That said, the area is less developed for tourism but has spectacular views of the gulf and islands. If you want solitude, this is it.
Ilopango
The sleeper. Which means not a cone — a caldera. In practice, 8x11 km, filled by Lake Ilopango. That said, formed by a massive eruption around 450 AD (the "Tierra Blanca Joven" eruption) that devastated Mayan settlements across the region and likely caused global cooling. Another eruption in 1879-1880 created the Islas Quemadas in the lake center. The caldera is restless* — uplift, gas emissions, seismic swarms. A future large eruption would be catastrophic for the San Salvador metro area, which now extends to the caldera's rim.

The Rest: Dormant, Extinct, and "Just Hills"
The other 17 volcanoes don't make headlines. But they shape the landscape.
Cerro Verde — 2,030 m, cloud forest draped over an old eroded stratovolcano. The national park visitor center sits here. It's the gateway to Santa Ana and Izalco hikes.
San Vicente (Chinchontepec) — Twin peaks, 2,173 m. Distinctive profile visible from the Pan-American Highway. Hot springs at its base (Aguas Termales de San Vicente). Last eruption unknown, probably Holocene.
Tecapa — Complex volcano with a crater lake (Laguna de Alegria) famous for its sulfur-colored water. Geothermal plant on its flanks — El Salvador generates ~25% of its electricity from volcanic heat.
Usulután — Eroded stratovolcano, 1,449 m. Coffee farms cover its slopes. The town of Usulután sits at its base.
Taburete — 1,172 m, forested, overlooked. Sits between San Vicente and San Miguel.
Chinameca (El Pacayal) — 1,300 m, broad summit with a 2 km wide crater. Fumaroles active. Coffee country.
Guadalupe — 1,592 m, heavily eroded. The town of Nueva Guadalupe sits in its old crater.
Apaneca Range — Not a single volcano but a volcanic massif: Apaneca, Las Ninfas, Laguna Verde, El Aguila. Cloud forest, coffee, the Ruta de las Flores tourist route winds through here.
Cojutepeque — Small cone near the city of the same name. Quarrying has eaten into its flanks.
Cerro Grande — 1,632 m, forested, part of the Apaneca-Ilamatepec biosphere reserve.
Cerro El Tigre — Small, forested, near the Guatemalan border.
Cerro La Montañona — Not strictly volcanic (metamorphic core) but often grouped in regional counts. Highest point in northern El Salvador.
Laguna de Metapán — Maar crater lake, not a cone. Formed by

Beyond the named edifices, El Salvador’s volcanic legacy is etched into countless subtle features: narrow basaltic dikes that snake through coffee terraces, scattered scoria cones that rise like isolated sentinels above the plains, and extensive lava fields that have been reworked into fertile soils supporting the nation’s renowned cacao and sugarcane crops. Geothermal manifestations — fumaroles, hot springs, and altered mineral deposits — dot the flanks of many older edifices, silently reminding residents that the Earth’s interior remains active even when the surface appears quiet.
