What Actually Happened in October 1582

The short version: Pope Gregory XIII signed a papal bull called Inter gravissimas* in February 1582. It mandated a new calendar — the Gregorian calendar — to replace the Julian calendar that had been in use since Julius Caesar's time.

The Julian calendar had a small but stubborn error. It calculated the solar year as 365.25 days exactly. The real solar year? So naturally, about 365. 2422 days.
