The molt — the dangerous hour

Don't mist during a molt. But don't move the enclosure. In real terms, don't even breathe too loud near it. Okay, that last one's hyperbole. But treat a molting insect like a bomb disposal situation: quiet, still, patient.

Eggs and incubation

Females flick eggs. Collect them weekly. Incubate on slightly damp vermiculite in a sealed container with a pinhole for gas exchange. They don't bury them. Seriously. In real terms, label everything. On the flip side, 24–26°C. Hatch times vary wildly: 3 months for some Phyllium, 12+ months for others. The eggs fall to the substrate — coconut fiber, peat, vermiculite, or even paper towel. Overcrowding.

This isn't a social insect. Overcrowding leads to competition for food, stress, and the rapid spread of any pathogens. In practice, while they tolerate each other's presence, they are solitary feeders. More isn't better. A pair or a small group is the goal, not a colony.

Ignoring the source.

Pet store "stick insects" are often misidentified, parasite-riddled, or already doomed. Source from a reputable breeder who can tell you the species, its origin, and its specific dietary needs. A wild-caught specimen is a ticket to introducing mites, nematodes, and unknown diseases into your collection.
